Ladies, we would love to say that there is no right or wrong way to network, but unfortunately this is not the case. There is a right way. When networking, it is essential to do it right as doing it wrong will result in the opposite of what you intended to achieve. The very people you seek to attract might end up being repelled by you!
So, what is networking, and how do we do it right? A definition of networking states that it is "the action or process of interacting with others, to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts." If you ask me, I would simply term it as professional socializing for a purpose.
Networking is a skill that comes naturally to some people. If you, do not naturally poses this skill, you will have to build it up. Networking the right way requires attention and focus. You need to be deliberate about it. You are only as good as the people you know, work with, and are friends with. You are only as strong as your affiliations. That’s why when it comes to networking the size of your network is not as important as the quality of the people in your network.
In networking, there is a term called ‘social currency’. It refers to the value that you derive from the people in your network, and the value they derive from you. This tells us that the more value you offer, the more valuable the relationships you build will be. The term currency indicates an exchange. We need to realise that networking is not just about taking from others, but about giving something back.
Certain unwritten rules govern the concept of networking. Whilst the list below is by no means exhaustive, it spells out certain dos and don’ts, that will make your transition into the networking world a lot smoother.

On a final note, please remember that you can network online and in person. This is one of the best times to network online. People are more open to making new and different connections this season, so don’t be a loner. Social distancing doesn't mean you have to be alone!
